This year we are going to be reading through the Gospel of John together.

A problem of vicarious spirituality…

One of the problems facing the church in the UK is that many people in the church are living off another person’s spirituality…. We might call it vicarious spirituality?

Introduction to John

The Gospel of John was written by the disciple John.  He wrote it after Jesus had died and been resurrected, but before John was exiled on the island of Patmos – probably around AD 85-90 or as early as AD 50.  John’s Gospel is different from the other three gospels and contains lots of unique stories based on what John saw and experienced with Jesus.  The other gospels are thought to be based on the experiences of Simon Peter.  John writes for non-believers and clearly sets out to show that Jesus is the Son of God.  Right from the beginning he puts the historical Jesus in the context of eternity.  The very last verse confirms what John had in mind as he wrote….  “But these are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name.” – John 20:31

The stories are John’s eyewitness reports of the situations, but obviously he doesn’t write everything down; just what he feels is relevant.  As you read try to imagine the scene John is telling us about and how he must have felt.
