John 17:1-26

Read John 17:1-26

Last night I watched a couple of episodes of Band of Brothers.  The carnage and horror of war is well captured but so is the camaraderie of Easy Company as they fought their way across Europe.  Jesus paints a picture of a world caught up in conflict.  Those who believe in Jesus are the ground troops through whom the kingdom will be advanced – reclaiming ground from the enemy under the direction of Jesus.  He asks the father to keep his troops safe, rather than to have them removed from the battle.

We are God’s plan for the salvation of the world.  This is a battle.  Sometimes we are like people wandering around a conflict zone sleeping walking in our pyjamas blissfully unaware of the battle raging all around us.  Like the Band of Brothers, standing side by side and watching each other’s back, let’s pull on our fatigues (armour of God – Ephesians 6:10-20) and get out there!

If you want to feel very bold this morning read that last paragraph again and then pray with this music on in the background http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7uTAIpU0sa0  You probably need to have watched the series??

  • Does the idea of a battle make sense to you?
  • What role do you feel you have in the battle?
  • Are you part of a tight knit company?
  • Did you know that you appear in the Bible?  Jesus prays specifically for you in John 17:20!  How does that make you feel?

May we play our part in the battle for the kingdom.
