Jesus is making some big statements here…. “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” Jesus says that if you follow Him it is as though your life is a journey with the lights on rather than groping around in the dark. That’s a big claim. And the Pharisees want to know if he can back it up. Most holy men point towards God, but here Jesus is pointing to himself. Again the Pharisees want some answers.
Jesus claims to be from heaven – God’s place. But no human could possibly dwell in the presence of the living God, that’s why they had the holy of holies in the Temple. So he is either bonkers or actually on a par with God. Then Jesus goes and says it…. He actually uses God’s personal name – translated as “I am” – and applies it to himself not once, not twice but three times! (v 24, 28 and 58) Jesus is claiming to be God. The Jews understood what he was saying and in verse 59 they try to stone him for blasphemy.
- It’s much easier to see where you are going with the lights on. Do you feel that you are navigating life with the lights on?
- Do you believe Jesus is God? (v 24 and 28)
- What is the attitude of the Pharisees?
- In what ways are they like you and in what ways are they different?
May we always walk in the light that Jesus provides for our lives.
